About Our Free Chess Tournaments at the Public Library
Our Quad Chess Tournaments are friendly, local events designed to give young players meaningful tournament experience in a supportive environment. These events are held at branches of the Brooklyn Public Library and are completely free for kids in our community.
Players are grouped into Quads — small groups of four players with similar ratings or skill levels. Each player competes in three rated games, facing every other player in their group. This format ensures balanced competition and gives every child a fair chance to play strong, instructive games.
At the end of the tournament, the winner of each Quad receives a medal to celebrate their achievement and effort.
Each tournament typically includes three rounds (G25 / d5) and is limited to around 40 players to maintain a comfortable, organized, and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Depending on the number of participants, we may organize both rated and unrated events, giving players of all levels the opportunity to participate and gain tournament experience.
Our goal is simple: to strengthen young players, build confidence, and provide local tournament opportunities right here in Brooklyn so families don’t have to travel far to enjoy quality chess events.
Most importantly, we strive to create a fun, friendly, and educational atmosphere where every child feels welcome, challenged, and proud to play.
